The Cutting Edge

January 6, 2017

Here's what's happening across our Conference, at least what I've heard about. Feel free to share this with anyone!
"A group of Hispanic believers planted a congregation in Topeka in June 2011. Since then they have purchased their own building and continued to grow," says Hispanic Coordinator Roberto Correa. "The Conference Executive Committee voted on December 11 to accept this group into the sisterhood of churches of the Kansas-Nebraska Conference. Tomorrow afternoon there will be a special service to officially form this new church and welcome the charter members," says Roberto.
"This week as the halls filled up with students, we couldn't help but smile knowing that a brand new semester was starting at College View Academy," says Missy Sorter. "The possibilities are endless...the seniors will be getting ready to graduate, students will take part in a mission trip, knowledge will be gained, friendships made, new students welcomed, and many prayers sent heavenward! We pray for God's many blessings as we start a new semester and the beginning of a new year!" says Missy.
Pastor Ryan Watson let me know, "Members of Garden City and Dodge City had some fun this Christmas as we gathered for our annual holiday party. The main event was a variation of a White Elephant gift exchange," says Pastor Ryan.
“Piedmont Park’s Better Day Ministry (Benevolent Fund) is saying thank you to our Heavenly Father and to generous donors who helped three heartwarming causes over the 2016 Holiday Season,” shares Vanessa Schaecher. “Ministry Chair Renee Schaecher reports that at Thanksgiving the Better Day Ministry sponsored a Thanksgiving Food & Turkey fundraiser for the Good Neighbor Center’s Thanksgiving Basket program with donors giving 222 pounds of food and over $1,200 in financial donations! At Christmas the Better Day Ministry held a ‘Happy Toys’ fundraiser to benefit the GNCC’s Grandparents Toy Room with 45 toys and over $800 given to help low income Grandparents give gifts to their grandkids at Christmas. At Christmas generous donors also helped the Better Day Ministry adopt eight families and provide them with a meal, one gift for each family member, gas vouchers and some clothing. The smiles on the faces of the little children were a delight when they saw their Christmas gift topped with a shiny bow. The Better Day Ministry Team expresses thankfulness to everyone who supports this important ministry at Piedmont Park,” says Vanessa.
"The pastors of our Conference met in Topeka for two days of learning, fellowship and growth this week," says Virgil Covel (Ministerial Director). "Kevin Miller, president of the Alaska Conference, shared fresh perspectives on the three angels messages in the context of the gospel. He reminded us that the last-day warnings of prophecy are a messages of compassion for a broken world. Tuesday evening a the pastors enjoyed a special dinner followed by Elder Dick Stenbakken giving a wonderful message impersonating John the Revelator on the Isle of Patmos emphasizing the transforming power of a personal relationship with Jesus," says Virgil.

Delmar Austin: Adult Ministries
Dean Carlisle: Disaster Relief/Community Services

Sue Carlson: Children's/Family/Women's Ministries
Virgil Covel: Ministerial/Evangelism
Francois Erasmus: Disaster Relief/Community Services

Norm Zimmerman: Stewardship/Trust Services
"I had the exciting opportunity to officiate my first wedding on New Year's Day as Jared Blood and Heather Gomez were joined together in marriage," reports Pastor Ryan Watson (Garden City). "We were happy to catch this photo with the new couple following the reception and just before they escaped in Jared's semi truck. Our daughter was one of the flower girls," says Pastor Ryan.
“We love having our Church Kids participate in the Worship Service at Piedmont Park all throughout the year. But Christmas time holds a special tradition where the Sabbath Schools each put together a song or other special item and share it during a December Church Service,” shares Vanessa Schaecher. “This year the Sabbath the classes were scheduled turned out to be the week that church was cancelled due to icy roads. Thankfully several of the classes were able to reschedule and share their songs on the last Sabbath of December,” says Vanessa.
"There are SO MANY AMAZING resources available to minister to our children," says Sue Carlson (Children's Ministries Director). "I'm in Tucson learning and experiencing so much. As we minister to children, as Jesus did, many lives will be changed. To see a few things we've been up to, click here. Here are some pictures of the new Vacation Bible School
program, 'Cactusville,' produced by the Adventist Church. Contact me if you want to know more! says Sue.
"Cactusville kits will be available at our Mid-America Union Children's Leadership Conference March 3-5 in Lincoln, Nebraska! Plan now to attend this weekend training!" says Sue.
"The Christmas season was full of drama in Garden City as the students took one Sabbath to share the Christmas story through a play which was written and directed by our teacher Jessi Whitson," shares Pastor Ryan Watson. "The next Sabbath I shared a musical monologue of the Christmas story as told by a shepherd of Bethlehem," says Pastor Ryan.
The offering tomorrow is for your local church budget. Without the faithful support of each member the mission of your church is made more difficult. Help provide for the needs of God's work in your community by being generous to your church budget. Click here.
Here's what some from the office are up to.
  • Virgil Covel (Ministerial Director) says, "This weekend Pati and I will be at home in the Wanamaker Church helping to lead a special visitor weekend featuring Elder Dick Stenbakken for Friday night vespers, the church service and a final presentation on Sabbath afternoon. Each member is making a special effort to invite family and friends to these interesting presentations. I'll be flying to Tucson on Sunday."
  • John Sweigart (VP for Administration) will be with the Topeka Hispanic congregation on Sabbath afternoon to organize them into a new church.
  • Sue Carlson (Children's Ministries Director) is in Tucson attending the NAD Children's Ministry Retreat.
  • Norm Zimmerman (Trust Services Director) is heading for Tucson for NAD Ministries Convention this week.
  • Darin Gottfried (VP for Finance) will be part of the service tomorrow afternoon at the Topeka Hispanic Church.
  • I will be in worshiping and preaching at the West Lenexa Church in the morning. In the afternoon, I'll be with the Topeka Hispanic congregation to help organize them into a church.
**If you know something that you think would be of interest to other Kansas-Nebraska Adventists, please let me know. I am trying to keep everyone on the "cutting edge" by sending this out each Friday.

Have a wonderful Sabbath!
